Ana Gabarron, Artist and Designer from Murcia (in southern Spain), 26 years old. In 2015 she created her own fashion brand: Funny Swing. For her, textile is like a blank canvas in which to fill up with color.
Madrid: “I came to Madrid 3 years ago for a Research Master in Art and Creation at the Complutense University. In Murcia I studied Fine Arts.”
Family: “My mother and my grandmother are the central pillars of my vocation. My grandmother was a dressmaker and she painted in her free time. My mother was always great at it. She’s an artist even though she doesn’t know it. They were the ones who took me to painting classes when I was 8.”
Fashion_Art: “Fashion appears in my art ever whenever I talk about my family. My work is always looking for and following the same concept: memories, always linked to my personal story. My grandmother taught me all the necessary elements for making clothing. I use thread like it was paint, patterns like structures and fabric is my paper.”
Funny Swing: “It’s a clothing brand of timeless style, focusing on prints and dynamic, alternative and creative forms. Happiness, swing, brevity, speed, time and its memory are the concepts that make up the essence of the brand. I look after the design of my clothes very carefully. The collection’s shapes are oversized, with straight lines and structures in block. The shirt is the star piece. When you create a print you also need to think a lot about the shape of the support, because it will change, depending on the pattern. The fabrics of this first collection are cotton, viscose, neoprene and silk. I’m in charge of the design and patronage, and I have a workshop for the design and production.”
Audience: “Although there are unisex pieces, this first collection is aimed at girls. Someone who appreciates made in Spain designs and the things that are made by hand in small workshops. A vibrant girl, daring and fun, who isn’t afraid to wear prints and to move away from repetitive fads.”
Designer Collection Dresses: “They’re the most special pieces in the collection. They’re created from pieces of my artwork. They’re unique. The pattern that is selected is a dress with a tailored collar and bodice front, with a slight oblong shape at the hem. The prints are drawings of the series ‘Un balanceo, un recuerdo’ (‘One rocker, One memory’) made with ink and markers.”
Prices: “From 25 to 200 euros.” Points of sale: “There are now 2 in Madrid: Gazela Thomson on Pez Street, and Miseria on Veronica Street.”
