Kirstie ya es oficialmente, “la chica del grupo”. Nos referimos a Is Tropical, la banda londinense que nació en 2009 como trío y que cuenta ahora entre sus miembros con esta chica de larga melena rubia que además es la novia de Gary Barber, uno de los componentes del grupo. Inmersos en una gira infinita para promocionar su último disco, “Black Anything”, publicado por entregas, conseguimos quedar con Kirstie en Londres para entrevistarla y hacer esta sesión de fotos.
Hola Kirstie, cuéntanos algo sobre ti y dinos cómo llegaste a Is Tropical. “¡Hola! Nací en el norte de Inglaterra, en Blackburn, pero me mudé a Londres con mi familia cuando tenía 11 años, de eso hace 17 (así que haz las cuentas y tendrás mi edad). Me fui a vivir al este de Londres en 2007 y allí fue donde conocí a Gary y a Simon, y un año más tarde más o menos conocí a Dom. No estaba metida en la música por aquel entonces, solo estaba por allí cuando los chicos daban conciertos. No fue hasta 2013 cuando canté por primera vez, y eso fue en el tema ‘Dancing Anymore’. La verdad es que fue un shock para mí cuando me pidieron cantar en la grabación, en realidad fue una casualidad, porque estaba por allí en ese momento y Gary necesitaba una voz femenina”.
¿Cuál es tu formación? “Empecé a estudiar Bellas Artes pero lo dejé cuando empecé con el grupo, vi que ellos se lo pasaban mucho mejor que yo”.
¿Recuerdas cómo os conocisteis? “Fue una noche en el White Heat del Soho, aunque la verdad es que no me acuerdo de mucho, solo sé que pasó algo con la policía…”.
¿Y cómo surgió lo de convertirte en un miembro más de la banda? ¿qué ha supuesto esto para ti? “La verdad es que todo ha sucedido de forma muy espontánea, nunca nos sentamos a hablar al respecto. Las nuevas canciones de Black Anything parecían estar hechas con mi voz en mente”.

Kirstie is officially, ‘the girl of the band’. We’re referring to Is Tropical, the London band that was formed in 2009 as a trio and now counts this girl with the blond mane among its members. She also happens to be the girlfriend of Gary Barber, one of the other band members. In the middle of a seemingly never-ending tour to promote their latest record, ‘Black Anything,’ released in stages, we manage to meet up with Kirstie in London to interview her and do this photo shoot.
Hi Kirstie, to begin with, tell us something about you and how you started to take your first steps into the music world… “Hi! I was born in Northern England, in Blackburn, but I moved to London with my family when I was 11, which was 17 years ago (do the maths and you’ll have my age). I went to live in East London in 2007 and it was there that I met Gary and Simon, and about one year later I met Dom. I was not involved in music at that point, I was only around the guys as they played concerts. It was not until 2013 that I sang for the first time and that was on the song ‘Dancing Anymore’. The truth was that it was a shock for me when they asked me to sing on the recording. It was actually just a coincidence because I was there at the time and Gary needed a female voice.”
What is your educational background? “I began to study fine arts but I stopped when I joined the group; I saw that they were having a much better time than I was.”
Do you remember how you met them? “It was at a night at White Heat in Soho, although the truth is that I don’t remember much, only that something happened with the police…”
And how was it that you became a member of the band? What has this meant for you? “The truth is that everything happened very spontaneously, we never sat down and talked about it. The new songs on Black Anything seem to have been made with my voice in mind.”
