James Gallagher Introduction

I’m a sucker for Dennis Busch’s art. It has an immediacy that satisfies the thrill-seeker in me. Then there is an after-effect of guilt (the kind I felt after sneaking a peek at dirty magazines as a kid) and hilarity (the grade school type). However, the permanent impression is that he’s an artist who has something to say and is not afraid to say it.

Busch’s work is all about being bold. He plasters strong images, scrawls cryptic words, and introduces shuddering colors, all in a quick and confident manner. Whether it’s a face vomiting from every orifice, a frog dissected into a day-glo mess, or a giant limp cock doing battle with a street cop, all are screaming at the viewer in perfect unison. “Keep looking, I know you want to!”

And that is exactly what I did. After my first Busch exposure, I was certain that I had to contact him. Before long he was included in both the Cutting Edges book (I co-edited for Gestalten), and the Cutters Exhibition in West Cork, Ireland. I was thrilled to have him in these compilations and his images added excitement and edge to both.

There is no getting back to normal once you’ve been exposed. Viewing Busch’s humorous, raw and often entertaining imagery is like a jolt to the system. It’s a shock, then a lingering current, ending with a singed mark inside the eyeballs. Pop. Sizzle. Hiss.
